ニューヨーク出身のアーティストであり、友人のクレッグと神仏参拝をテーマにしたブログを立ち上げることになり、最初に選んだのはまずは地元からというわけで長野県と群馬県の県境に社殿が建つ熊野皇大神社へ。この神社は石段から神門、本殿にかけてその真ん中に県境ラインがあり、社務所も向かって左側が長野県、右側が群馬県と別れており神職さんもそれぞれにいらっしゃいっます。
当日は恒例の春の例大祭ということでそれぞれの社務所ごとに奉納の舞などが披露されていて宗教的に異文化育ちのクレッグ氏は興味深く感じていたようでした。そもそも彼は普段から日本のこのような宗教施設に多分に興味があるらしく、ちょいちょい僕にその日行った神社仏閣の写メを送ってきたりしています。「なんか呼ばれているみたいなんだ‥」と言いながらときに妖しい場所や、僕もまだ知らないような興味深い場所の写真が突然送られてきたりします。
一連の舞などを拝見した後、長野県側の社務所の裏側から神社裏の山を10分ほど登り奥社を登拝。本殿前の境内は祭礼ということで普段にも増して賑わっていましたが、ここまで訪れる人はまばらです。「熊野」のお名前を冠した神社なので、この山にはめっちゃ大きな八咫烏さんがいるらしいよ‥などとオッサン二人で見えない世界の話などしながら最奥の祠に二礼二拍手一礼の作法でお参りして来ました。帰りはしっかり碓氷峠の力餅をいただき、近くの見晴台まで足を伸ばし、すぐ向こうに広がる妙義連山を見ながら、次は群馬県側の神社に行ってみようかなど約束して本日は終了。

A few days ago, my friend Jin called me in the early morning to invite me to a rare Shinto ceremony at the Kumano Temple in Karuizawa. Especially rare for me being that I have never been to any Shino ceremonies. We arrive at the Kumano Temple just in time.
As I climb to the top of the stairs, a ceremony begins to take place. Music is being performed and a group of three people in ceremonial dress, in turn, enter the tatami performing area to participate in a ceremony of which I have no understanding. Beautiful cloths, slow deliberate movements, and unusual music make the whole scene, for me, entrancing. The cloths being worn must have a specific significance, but for my eyes, I see colorful geometric shapes moving against a background of nature.
Two of the performers are wearing masks that must represent some beings maybe Kami (gods). One person uses a bow and arrow for which he seems to be warding off spirits that I cannot see. At last, with wind instruments and a drum being played, a masked person scatters rice around the tatami area, walks off, the music stops, and the ceremony is over.
As Jin and I explore the rest of the temple grounds, I seem to have a keener sense of my place in nature, and just maybe, for a second, I can sense the Kami amongst the trees.
